Marcus Michels holds several degrees in the art of painting. He received a BFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University, a MA in Painting from Eastern Illinois University and a MFA in Painting from Indiana University.
His work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions and two person exhibits, as well as numerous international juried, national juried, regional juried and invitational exhibitions. His most recent solo exhibition was in January 2015 at the Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville, NC. His work was recently part of two international juried exhibitions in 2015, the Fresh Paint: 2nd Biennial Painting Exhibition and the 7th Annual Nude: Exploring the Uncovered Human Form, both at the Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. His most significant national juried exhibition was the 3rd National Juried Exhibition, at the Prince Street Gallery in New York, New York in 2011. William Bailey was the juror for this exhibition. Bailey, who is a renowned artist and Professor Emeritus at the Yale School of Art, selected 64 pieces from 934 works out of 259 submissions for the exhibition. His most notable regional juried exhibition was The Red Clay Survey, at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama in 2014. The juror for this exhibition was Susanna Coffey, who is a nationally known painter and Professor in Painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This exhibition was juried in two stages. There were over 1,500 initial entries submitted for the first stage, and 113 were selected for the second stage, of which only 90 works by 72 artists were selected. He had three paintings selected for this exhibition, one of which received a Merit Award.
Five of his paintings have been published in three international juried annual publications of contemporary painting (INPA) through the Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. His paintings “Sara” and “Snowbird” are in the INPA 1; this book was published in October 2011. “MH” and “Marissa” are in the INPA 2; this book was published in September 2012 and “Orbit” will be in the INPA 5; this book will be published in the spring of2016. His work will also be published in three other books by the Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; his painting “Orbit” will appear in the Manifest Exhibition Annual: Season 10, his paintings “Catapult” and “Curl” will appear in the Manifest Exhibition Annual: Season 11 and his painting “Reversed L” will appear in the Manifest Exhibition Annual: Season 12.
