Artwork by students in the Art and Design program, housed in the School of Performing and Visual Arts (SPVA) at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), will be on exhibit for its 2023 Annual Juried Student Show, from March 23 through April 6 on the Hattiesburg Campus. An opening reception will be held March 23 at 6 p.m. in the Gallery of Art and Design in the George Hurst Building.
This annual student show is a juried exhibition of works produced by Art and Design students in the SPVA. This anticipated annual event is presented each spring and provides art students the opportunity to exhibit their creative visual arts pieces as they compete for awards in various categories.
This year’s show was juried by Ben Jones, a creative designer based in New York City; Ian Childers, a professor of ceramics at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Miss.; and USM alumna Victoria Meek, a visual artist in Jackson, Miss., who currently serves the Mississippi Arts Commission as executive assistant and special initiatives director.
The Annual Student Show in Art and Design includes works from studio courses in art foundations, drawing, painting, printmaking, digital photography, ceramics, sculpture, and several categories in graphic design.
“As a juried show, this is one of our most anticipated events of the year,” said Mark Rigsby, associate professor and director of the Gallery of Art and Design. “We always look forward to this opportunity to view and celebrate all the hard work and studio achievements of our students in Art and Design.”
The exhibit can be viewed at the Gallery of Art and Design in the George Hurst Building, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For questions about the Annual Student Show, contact Mark Rigsby at 601-266-5200
